Self-Care | Both a Priority and A Privilege
As a massage therapist, I know the importance of a good self-care routine. Not only for myself, but also my clients. It helps balance you physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
There are a lot of ways to take care of yourself. I highly suggest try anything and everything – see how it makes you feel – and decide from there if you want to implement that strategy into your self-care.
Here are what I’m currently doing to better care for myself.
I have a love/hate relationship with exercise. I tend to get on the fitness bandwagon for a few months and then fall right back off. But I can absolutely say that everything functions better in my life when I’m actively moving my body more days than not.
Right now, I’ve been using beachbody All-Access pass. It was a one-time yearly fee, and I have online access to all of their current and future programs. My coach is Odette, from The Harmony Tribe. She’s amazing. Super inspirational, and she doesn’t run her groups as 30 day challenges, but instead knows that fitness and wellness is a forever thing and runs her support group just like that.
In the past, I’ve used gyms, yoga/cycle studios, triathlons, and it all depends on what is happening in my life on whether that style of exercising works for me or not.
Thera Cane + Deep Blue Rub
There are a ton of different trigger point tools like the Thera Cane, but this brand is my favorite. It has a simple hook with multiple points to watch on your knots. It can took a little time to get the hang of it, so I recommend looking up videos on YouTube if you’re
I try to use my Thera Cane about 2-3 times per week. And I follow it up with an application of Deep Blue Rub. I used to use BioFreeze, but honestly Deep Blue Rub is better especially for long-term care. Its analgesic effect (instant pain reliever) isn’t as strong as BioFreeze, but it makes for a better next day pain from my experience with it.
Reading continues to be a self-care technique for me. I need the time to decompress and escape that reading offers me. I try to vary what I read, but fiction – lighthearted is best – when I’m trying to distress and let go.
I’ve used essential oils off and on for almost 10 years, but this year, I’m getting back into them in a BIG way. I believe in using all forms of healthcare and wellness-oriented
activities, but the more natural, the better for me.
Every night I’ve been diffusing blends specific for stress, anxiety and rest. It has helped with my mental clarity, and while I still get anxious and upset at times, I find that I can calm down and re-focus easier than before.
So I’m a massage therapist who for a LONG time never got massage, but as I’ve shifted back into full-time status (25+ hours of hands-on time a week), I have made it a big priority to get regular bodywork.
For me, this is massage currently, but I’ve also included chiropractic care as needed in the past.
